Comprehensive Cardiac Care

Welcome to Venice Regional Heart Center at
enice Regional Medical Center

Venice Regional Medical Center's Comprehensive Cardiac Care program has been recognized nationally, being named a  50 Top Cardiac Hospital by Thomson Reuters from 2006- 2011.

Complete Cardiac Care

Venice Regional Heart Center provides a complete spectrum of cardiac services, including emergency care, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery and rehabilitation.  In developing the center, the equipment was carefully selected and spaces were thoughtfully designed with you and your family in mind.  The staff incorporated the latest technology available, including an integrated computer system that enables physicians and staff to keep all patient information, imaging, and vital signs at their fingertips throughout the center.

Cardiologists affiliated with Venice Regional Heart Center have a full array of diagnostic capabilities available to them, including the newest, most advanced 64-slice computed tomography (CT) technology that is expected to drastically improve the early detection of cardiac disease.  Other diagnostic tests include electrocardiograms (ECG, Holter monitoring, transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) and exercise stress testing.  The Center was first in the region to acquire the GE Innova™ cardiovascular imaging system for its two new cardiac catheterization labs.  The world's first all-digital system, this groundbreaking technology provides cardiologists with precise information and revolutionary image quality, resulting in better diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.  Armed with this technology, cardiologists consult with other cardiovascular specialists to develop the best treatment path for patients.

Interventional Cardiology

In some patients, interventional cardiologists can treat blocked arteries with methods that are less invasive than surgery.  These procedures take place in Venice Regional Heart Center's cardiac catheterization labs using an all-digital cardiovascular imaging system.  The most common procedures - angioplasty, atherectomy and cardiac stenting - involve threading a thin tube, or catheter, through blood vessels to treat narrowed arteries. All of these procedures have a common goal: to improve blood flow to the heart.  Because the only point of entry into the body is to insert a catheter, patients often fully recover in one to two days.

In addition to treating blocked arteries, interventional cardiologists can treat other heart problems, such as arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and congestive heart failure.  Electronic devices such as pacemakers, automatic implantable cardiac defibrillators (AICD) and bi-ventrical pacemakers can be implanted using the digital system.

Interventional procedures provide a number of benefits if you are a patient. Because most procedures involve small incisions or punctures, there is less blood loss and scarring than with surgery.  Less anesthesia is needed, leading to fewer side effects.  In most cases, you can return home the same day or following an overnight stay - enabling you to return to normal activities quickly with little disruption in your life.

Cardiovascular Surgery

In 2003 the hospital partnered with the surgeons from Ocala Heart Institute, and Venice Regional Heart Center was born.  Ocala was chosen because of its excellent outcomes, with heart programs consistently named among the top 100 in the country.  Venice Regional Heart Center team members take overt pride in their work with a core philosophy that healing begins not only with the body, but also with the mind and spirit.  The team works in tandem not only to develop and carry out the best path of treatment for each patient, but also to change lives for the better.

The cardiovascular surgical team includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, perfusionists and nurses experienced in Ocala Heart Institute's methods.  After examining bypass, vascular and heart valve surgery from all angles, Ocala Heart Institute surgeons developed a unique team approach that allows complicated surgical procedures to run seamlessly for patients as well as our staff.  The team draws upon vast collective experience to determine the best surgical solution to each diagnosis.
Each member of the surgical team plays an important role at Venice Regional Heart Center.  One distinguishing factor is the specialized role of the cardiovascular anesthesiologist, who continually follows and directs care as the patient transitions from the operating room to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.  After about 24 hours, they transfer to the Cardiovascular Step-Down Unit, where they will recover until they are ready to return home.  If you are a patient, the goal is for you to become active again as quickly as possible.  Satisfaction with the program is high with the hospital's cardiovascular nursing unit, named a 5-Star award winner for patient satisfaction by the national research firm PRC.

A Team Approach

Everyone at Venice Regional Heart Center plays a part in helping you and your family cope with the challenges that lie ahead.  Our physicians believe in spending whatever time it takes to answer your questions and help you understand what to expect.  Our staff includes a cardiac educator whose role is to orient you and your family members to the hospital and to provide the information and support you need to face treatment and recovery with confidence and hope.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Should surgery be the path to recovery, your care team will develop a program that will not only help you get better, but also will reduce your risk for future heart problems and improve your overall health.  Although the program is tailored to each individual, Venice Regional Heart Center's cardiac rehabilitation program takes place in three phases.  Phase 1 beings with education and light movement while the patient is hospitalized.  During Phase II, the patient's heart function is closely monitored while exercising several days a week on an outpatient bases at Venice Regional Medical Center.  Phase III is an outpatient exercise and educational program geared toward continuing the road to complete recovery.

Over time, exercises will become gradually more intense to help build strength, flexibility and endurance.  The educational component covers topics including smoking cessation, stress reduction, weight control and strategies for controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels.  The goal is to help patients learn how to incorporate exercise, diet and lifestyle changes into their everyday lives.

Electrophysiology (EP) Lab

Venice Regional's Electrophysiology Lab offers our a way of treating and diagnosing irregular heartbeats by placing catheters in the chamber of the heart to measure electrical activity.  This allows for an accurate diagnosis, which is then treated with radio frequency.  The EP Lab improves the quality of life in our community by decreasing the risk of stroke, heart attack, the use of medication and providing the community with quick and easy access to an EP Lab with award winning care.
